Tick Removal and Preventation Tips.

Most ticks have a preferred host at different stafes of their stages of their livies, such a dear,or mice..

Ticks are more than just a nuisance—they can transmit serious illnesses if not handled properly. Whether you’re hiking, gardening, or spending time outdoors with pets, following smart prevention and removal practices can significantly reduce your risk

Personal Protection Outdoors

When walking in grassy or wooded areas, wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck your pants into your socks to prevent ticks from crawling inside. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks before they attach. Apply EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, and consider permethrin-treated clothing for added protection. Stay in the center of trails, avoid brushing against tall grass or shrubs, and wear closed-toe shoes instead of sandals.

Tick Checks and Hygiene

After outdoor activities, perform a full body tick check as soon as possible. Shower within two hours of coming indoors and use a mirror to inspect hard-to-see areas. Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, behind the ears, underarms, belly button, behind knees, between legs, and around the waistline. Keep fingernails short to make inspections easier.

Proper Tick Removal

Remove ticks promptly to reduce the risk of disease. Use fine-tipped tweezers, grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward steadily without twisting or crushing the tick. Never use heat, chemicals, or bare fingers. After removal, clean the bite area with soap and water, disinfect the tweezers, and apply antiseptic. Save the tick in a sealed container if identification is needed.

Monitoring After a Tick Bite

Monitor the bite area for redness, rash, or swelling. Watch for flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or muscle aches. Document the date of the bite and take photos of any unusual rashes. Seek medical advice if symptoms appear or if you are unsure about proper removal.
